Like so many small & family businesses we’ve made major changes almost overnight to keep our business going, protect our staff and suppliers and in our case provide accessible food to people who suddenly needed it more than ever!

A big shout out to all businesses who are adapting at top speed and going the extra mile to stay open.

As we’re starting to get the hang of this whole new way of operating, we thought you might like to know what working at Coburn and Baker is like in times of a Global Pandemic so here’s some highlights from the changes we’ve made so far……………….

 

 

 

 

  • Any staff that could work from home or were considered more vulnerable were sent home to stay safe before lockdown started. Some very reluctantly…..we are running on about 50% staff but are determined to get every single member of our staff team back to work.

 

                                  We clean EVERYTHING that has been touched!

 

  • Our offices are on a separate floor to the baking areas and each office area is used by a maximum of 2 people and staff cannot move between rooms. Production staff can’t enter offices and vice versa. We use office email and company Whatsapp to communicate or (shout sometimes!) Fortunately, we now have kettles in each room as tea is our company’s life blood (and you really do need it to wash down the cake tray off cuts!!)

  • We’ve bought bikes for any of our staff that needed them, so public transport is no longer used, (we’re not only being safer but we’re getting fitter too! 😊)

  • Each of the office staff have their own set of phones. Calls are never passed between us.

  • We have changed shift patterns with shifts now not overlapping or keeping to separate rooms for our baking and packing staff and we’ve reduced the number of our staff on each shift, adding weekend and odd hours shifts to cover the workload while keeping the 2m rule (thanks everyone! )

  • Monday to Friday background jobs have been moved to weekend to help keep the staff levels low during production.

  • Each driver is now keeping their own van permanently. No swapping and no one else is allowed inside their vans.

The Market Vans are now staffed by family members only (thanks everyone!) who live in the same household as we can’t uphold the 2M distance in the vans)

  • All staff are wearing masks and gloves (including us) and drivers

  • We were always obsessive about cleaning (we have a five-star HSE rating) but now it’s Massively obsessive cleaning!!!

  • No one at Coburn and Baker has been ill with COVID -19 yet, we are striving to keep it this way by monitoring all the staff very closely, erring in the side of caution and following all the guidelines to the letter.

 

Thanks for your support through these difficult times. We’ve been working very hard to change from Wholesale to a Community Baker, it’s thanks to you all that we’ve been able to keep our bakers baking, our cakers caking and our suppliers supplying. It’s greatly appreciated!

 

The only contagious ingredient to go into our ovens is pride and we hope you can taste it!!
